Here's Kainoa's addition to the blog.

Allison and Kainoa went on a sleigh and we met Rudolph. Kainoa and Allison talked to Santa. We told him that we have been good this year. I wished Kainoa and Allison met Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer. Santa and Rudolph went to pick Kainoa up from the airport and Santa picked Allison up at the airport too. Rudolph and Kainoa watched Allison skip. Then Allison and Rudolph watched Kainoa skip. Rudolph will pick up Kainoa from the chimney. Then they picked up Allison and then they went to visit Papa. Allison and Kainoa rode on Rudolph. Kainoa and Rudolph sat on a sleigh and Kainoa, Rudolph, Allison and Papa played on a house and you never know what's in the pinata! There was a cake on the roof. They then sang the song: Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer.

If you haven't visited and you're in the Sacramento area, I highly recommend this county park. There was a great fishing pond, horseback riding, goats, ducks to feed and lots of picnic ares. We went fishing early on this very hot day. We didn't have any luck, but did have a lot of fun!

Hidden Treasure

We found this very cool nursery last weekend. Mostly Japanese Maples, but hundreds of other fun trees and plants. We could have stayed there for hours exploring. It's 5+ acres of garden and smack dab in the middle is a gorgeous koi pond. For 25 cents you can get a handful of fish food and feed the beautiful swimmers.
In true Kainoa form, if there is a sprinkler to be found....he finds it!
I had a little fun in photoshop with these....tried a couple different "finishes".

We had such an amazing time! We met up with very good friends for a fun couple days in the San Diego area. Ben and Kainoa became fast friends and I'm only sorry these two super guys hadn't met earlier.

I highly recommend this trip to anyone with building obsessed or crazy busy little people in their lives. We could have easily spent another day there just playing in the water park or the huge climbing structure.

We also took a short trip to the San Diego Zoo's Wild Animal Park. If it weren't at the end of a very busy trip, we might have made it through the day. We will certainly go back there in a few years. If you have a wild animal in your life, this is a great park to visit.

Yes, Kainoa had his first trip to Disneyland. He (we) had a blast! We spent two great days with 50,000 other people and the the Disney cast. I threw in the picture below from today, we went strawberry picking. Tomorrow.....Lego Land!

Kainoa loves baseball and absolutely cannot wait to be able to play. So, today we watched the groundskeeper at our local ball park setting up. He soooo could have been there all day.

Then, he found the play ground with lots of sand and a great climbing structure.
And, then we went to visit Uncle Scott & Aunt Cole. Kainoa got to pick out an egg.

Wednesdays are a great day to have off. In our house, they start pretty early when Timi leaves for work. Kainoa and I take our time getting ready, unlike "work days" when we have to rush. Well.....today it started especially early. So, we headed out for a morning treat.

Next, we're going to make a special treat of applesauce for a sweet friend that's just starting to eat solid food.

I prefer the efficient apple peeler to make peeling and coring a bunch of apples easier.

Then, we're off to meet that sweet friend and her mama for a playdate at the zoo. Kainoa is especially excited to show her the tiger brothers and the lemurs.

Winter Fun

Have you ever seen your child having so much fun it brings tears to your eyes? Well, today...it happened to me. He had so much fun sledding and saying "let's do it again" at least a million times! The joy was pure and glorious.
We started with the idea of a quick family trip to play in the snow....but the closest snow that was deep or fresh enough to play in ended up being about 1 1/2 hrs away. We got everyone dressed and ready to play and I whipped out my camera only to discover that I left the memory card at home. I was quite frustrated with myself! We decided to get back in the car and drive the next 20 minutes to buy a new card. It turned out to be a fantastic decision. We ended up going into S. Lake T.ahoe and having a blast.

We took the gondola up to Hea.ven.ly ski res0rt.

Kainoa had the MOST fun sledding over and over and over.

The best ending to the day was that the trip home was smooth sailing the whole way...not a bit of traffic and Kainoa got in a pretty good almost 2 hr nap.

....to us! Six years ago today we were on Maui...hoping it wouldn't rain...getting married. It didn't rain (much) but it was a fabulous day. We were surrounded by family members and friends....and wouldn't have had it any other way.

Joy has been the word for the last week and continues into this week. We have had so much fun being together, sleeping in (yes, K has slept..albeit in our bed...until 6:30 or 7 most mornings), playing with toys, playing with friends, eating yummy food, taking naps, enjoying the sunshine, visiting family, you name it. Still on the list....play in the snow, play more, eat more, nap more, laugh tons more.

Meeting Santa

Like most toddlers, Kainoa has never been interested in meeting Santa. This year, though, he's done a great job. Still a little nervous and whispers when Santa talks to him, but there is a wonderful awe in the way Kainoa looks at him. He's starting to "get" the magic and power that is Santa...it is truly so much fun.

We have friends with children that are doubting Santa's existence and that makes me sad. I must admit I still keep a glimmer of hope that Santa will surprise me on Christmas morning...and he never fails. My parents and grandparents do a great job of keeping Santa's spirit alive and I only hope we can do the same for Kainoa.

Enjoying Fall (it is Fall, right?)

Yes, it's 75 here today.....we've spent the last two days out in the sunshine. It was so warm yesterday Kainoa reminded me to bring the sunscreen! It's been fun getting another few days out of our favorite summer clothes.

We're also trying to get ready for Christmas. I am committed to mindful spending this year....no impulse shopping that totally sends me over the budget EVERY year. I'm not yet at the "frugal" stage...but I'd like to be. I really want to teach Kainoa about all the wonderful traditions and stories of the season, not the over-spending and "gotta have's" that seem to permiate our society. Last year, I remember franticly searching for "that toy" I just had to get, but never found. This year, it's more simple. This year, we will enjoy the lights. We will enjoy reading the stories. We will focus on family, baby Jesus' birthday, making yummy treats for the neighbors, making presents that mean something and will capture this particular Christmas.

Halloween....Part 2

What a fun day! Kainoa has been so good.

You may remember last year's catastrophe of a costume. But, this year....he was all bat! He loved wearing his costume and when it was time for bed and time to take off the costume, he proudly informed us that he wasn't done wearing it yet!

We live in a wonderful neighborhood on a tucked-away street, so there was little traffic and only a few children (much quieter this year....maybe due to the rain?). So, it was a perfect first trick-or-treating experience for him. There was one house that was "too scary" but they were wonderful and came out to him.

After visiting our neighbors, Kainoa, Officer Punkinhead and I sat on the front porch handing out candy to the couple dozen children that came by....K was very generous....even giving treats to the adults that accompanied the kiddos.

Happy Halloween!

I've decided I have a very funny son....or silly parents (probably both)! This morning, when Kainoa woke up, I reminded him it was Halloween. The first words out of his mouth....seriously...were "Trick or Treat, Smell My Feet." Thanks Grandma & Paka :-)

At K's school, they get to wear traditional dress-up instead of scary or commercial costumes. Unfortunatly I don't have any traditional Taiwanese clothing (bad mama), but we do have LOTS of Aloha wear. So, Kainoa is honoring his Hawaiian roots today.

A Northern California tradition to usher in fall.....A Trip to Apple Hill

While I was only in the midwest for a few years, some of my favorite memories include trips to the cider mills.....oh, and those doughnuts! And, I remember going up to Paradise to Johnny Appleseed days. So, I was pretty excited to hear about Apple Hill near Placerville. Last year, we took little Kainoa, but it was damp and cold and waaaaay too busy (we went late on a Sunday afternoon). So, this year, we marked it on the calendar, took advantage of Kainoa's "early to rise" attitude and headed out early this morning. Brisk air, beautiful sunshine, no crowds, fresh doughnuts and LOTS of acorns. Absolutely perfect!

Have you boo'd your neighbor?

Yes....it's that time of year again!

What is "Boo'ing"?
Boo'ing is a fun neighborhood activity usually done throughout the month of October. You leave a surprise on a neighbor's door step, ring the bell and sneak away....they open the door and find your special treat. They, in turn, make a treat for two more neighbors and hopefully it goes on and on with everyone getting and giving a Halloween surprise.

With your treat (home made or store bought...I even saw complete "kits" at Target) you leave a poem explaining the tradition and the "rules" as well as a sign for the receiver to put in their window letting other neighbors know that they've already been boo'd.

Here's last years "Boo" I'll wait until later this month to post pics of this year's package.

Kainoa is beginning to understand the "ding & dash" concept....but has more fun seeing the neighbor smile when they find their surprise.

Higby's Grand Opening

Today was a special day for Uncle Scott and Aunt Nicole.

Higby's Country Feed had a Grand Opening Celebration for their new HUGE store. I really wish I had photos of the old shop so you can see the change. The new store is beautiful and full of so many things I never knew I needed.......if I had a horse....or a cow....or sheep....

Kainoa had fun at the kid's table with cousin Todd.

Sheba got a few new treats.

In addition to all the fun and games, we were treated to a very yummy lunch of tri tip sandwiches, roasted goat (oh. my. goodness.....soooo delicious), homemade macn'cheese, a tasty dilly mac salad and enough cake to feed all of Dixon. What a great day!

Saturday night was the end of a pretty nice run....we went to the ER for the first time in two years. Can you believe it??? A little guy, who's all boy, had never seen the inside of an emergency room.

It all started when my monkey was jumping on the bed...well, that's a bit dramatic...he was bouncing on the toddler bed mattress on our floor (for those late night visits...a partial remedy to this problem). He got just a bit too close to the desk and the corner reached out and got him...right on the chin! He ended up biting through his bottom lip. Lots of blood and tears later, we were sitting in the ER and waiting for a very kind Dr to remind Kainoa that monkeys are NOT to be jumping on the bed (even if that bed is on the floor)

I will spare you the details of the actual treatment...let's just say there was A LOT more crying. But, that crazy glue stuff is amazing...no stitches for curious little fingers to pick at.

UPDATE: The lip is healing beautifully and we're done with the antibiotics. Thanks for all your 'get well' wishes.

Here's a confession post....I'm addicted.

My name is Jennifer and I am addicted to TV and internet access.

I had a very sad realization (yes, everything is relative and in the grand scheme of things, this rates very low in importance) that I love watching TV and am completely addicted to checking email and jumping online when I just needed to know something.

Due to corporate takeovers and buyouts, we got caught in a cable tv/internet service blackout last week....since we use Vonage, we also lost our home phone service! I must admit, I've taken our service for granted and missed it when it was gone.

But, truth be told....I liked having the TV off. I liked talking with my husband. I liked not having the distraction when playing with our son. I liked the quiet.

In my old JVC days, we would do energy-fasts.....intentionally walking instead of driving, turning off tvs, radios, lights, etc. to not only conserve energy, but also to remove the distractions and spend quality time with one another.

In effect, our household had a version of an energy fast. And, we are better because of it.

Vacation!!!

We enjoyed a glorious four days away at the beach...playing, eating, getting wet, finding shells, eating some more, celebrating a cousin's 80th birthday and enjoying a family reunion. It was Timi and Kainoa's first trip that far north and our first plane trip as a family since our loooonnnnnggggg ride home from Taiwan...and we all did pretty well! We had a wonderful time...but 4 days just wasn't enough!

A friend shared this little find with us.

We found the most delicious thornless 'grape' blackberries.

As usual, Kainoa had a great time picking and eating.

He's become quite the efficient berry finder and

he's nice and close to ground to find the sweet plump ones!

A lot of work to find these sweet little gems....but, sooooooo worth the effort!

Neighborhood Party

There's not much better than sticky cotton candy on a (almost) summer evening!
Our neighborhood association had a summer party in the park tonight. We walked up to the park with our friends and had a great time just hanging out together. Lots of games, treats, fun and The Bee Movie on the big screen.

We tuckered out (plus it was very windy) way before the movie started. But, the boys were fascinated by the huge blow up screen.

The boys had a good time rolling down the hill, riding bikes, climbing on the playground equipment and, of course, munching on the yummy treats.

There is a hidden treasure in Colusa (there are many, actually) that I look forward to every May/June. We have gone many years and the periods of time when I lived too far away I missed it. My grandma used to take us, my parents took us and this year I got to take Kainoa. I think he liked it!

Big Boy Bed

A couple nights ago, I went in to check on him and (oooo...how I wish I had a photo) found him with one leg hanging over the rail of the crib. He was in the process of hoisting his solid little frame over so he could come see what we were up to, I'm sure of it.

So...the next day we're off to Ikea to find a little bed. Kainoa picked out his favorite and off we went. (picking it out was the easy part.....finding the parts and putting it together took A LOT more patience). Daddy did a fantastic job assembling the many parts.

I'm so proud of my little guy! He slept better than he has in weeks. And then this morning, he woke up SINGING! It was a beautiful sound....a combination of Twinkle Twinkle Little Star and Happy Birthday to You.

update...it's three weeks later and he's still doing great!

What an amazing day....and not in my usual "amazing day" type of posts.

Today is a special day for Californians (and residents of 24 other US states). We're voting in our primary today and our choices are historic (ok, two of them are). It truly is a Super Tuesday! This is not a political blog, (there are others that are far more articulate than I) so I won't go into my opinions, although they really aren't that hard to find (hint ----->)

but I voted with pride today and excitedly told Kainoa why this was such a magnificent day. To be honest, he was far more interested in the dog waiting for his person outside the polling location than he was in his gushing momma, but I can only hope this was a first of many political discussions in our home.

Trains, Trains and More Trains....

Not the most clever of titles, but it definitely sums up our day!

We spent Saturday morning downtown at the Train Show. And what a train show it was!!!

When we walked in, we were overwhelmed by all the moving parts...fabulous models, VERY enthusiastic train fans, Thomas the Tank engine was everywhere. (thank goodness a birthday is coming up....a great excuse to shop). Sooo many model trains -- most made noise, puffed smoke and even smelled like a train station (please don't ask me to describe it...just take Timi's word for it). There was even a model roller coaster that hit our soft spot. Our favorite find (ok, my favorite find) was a dvd of real trains on the tracks for only $6. maybe it's cooler in person...as I descibe it, it sounds a bit bland

Timi and Kainoa were able to ride in a neat train that had a real conductor and bell!

Kainoa certainly got the hang of packages, ripping the bows and wrapping paper, opening the boxes, playing with the new toy or book and then quickly moving on to the next one! We had two very fun days full of family, yummy food, delicious drink and of course, many, many packages.

What a glorious month! We have had so many blessings and excitement this month....with, of course, Kainoa front and center.

After the Christmas show, Grandma and Paka came over and

showed Kainoa the joy of whipping cream in a can...what fun!

One Saturday, we decided to avoid the task of cleaning house and took "the boys" (all of them, Kainoa, Timi and cousins Todd and Ryan) to The Nut Tree for a morning of playing, riding rides, eating ice cream and having a blast! Kainoa loves his cousins so much...he copies their every move.

Cooking with Kainoa

I have so many wonderful memories of cooking with my parents and grandparents. We were always encouraged to help in the kitchens of our youth. Everyone in our family cooks....some great memories include Grandpa George cracking walnuts with a very dangerous looking nutcracking contraption (not the cute Nutcracker from the ballet), making pasties with Gramma Uren and Grandma Ruth, my dad making pancakes with the grandkids, my mom teaching us about measuring and sharing favorite recipes, even the smell of my Grandpa Ed's liver and onions....yes, cooking and baking are definitely in my roots and am I glad about that!

Last week, I got the deep craving for an apple pie (not a regular craving for me...mine usually revolve something chocolate and gooey). I also wanted to make the pie...just a simple pie. So, I thought...it's time Kainoa gets his hands dirty and hopefully, begin to develop an appreciation for fresh from our kitchen goodness and take pride in his contribution to it. And, if I may say so myself, we all enjoyed the results!

Hunting for a Christmas Tree....We embarked on a new tradition today. We went hunting for the perfect tree. We heard about this wonderful small family run Christmas Tree Farm about 45 minutes from our home and went exploring. We found a wonderful tree and didn't have to sludge through a bit of snow! We'll go back in a couple weeks to cut it down, hopefully it will be a little colder....it's a bit hard to get in the Christmas spirit in 70 degree weather and lots of sun. I'm certainly not complaining, but it seems a bit warm for late November and there's something contradictory about not needed a jacket while finding a Christmas Tree.
The picture below was our attempt at trying to get Kainoa to pose in front of "our" tree. But, he's just toooo busy these days. Any "still" shot is truly accidental.

I had to toss this one in because, to tell you the truth, I've been waiting so long for this to happen....probably as long as the big boys have. Kainoa has had the great pleasure of spending some wonderful afternoons with his two older cousins and he's really beginning to enjoy being with them. He copies everything they do...it's really, really funny! He's getting the hang of rough housing (his cousins are masters) and below, I caught them in the act!

Kainoa's first Halloween! We had so much fun tonight...we just stayed home and answered the door, but Kainoa did a great job of showing off his best monkey face and handing treats to the children. He really did a wonderful job of sharing the candy and the children were very patient when he picked a special candy for them and placed it in their bag. He even gave some of our neighbors many treats!

We practiced wearing the monkey costume on Monday......it didn't go so well!

What a wonderful time of year! I got out of the car yesterday and the first thing I smelled was freshly raked leaves and a burning fireplace. Two undeniably "fall" smells. Two smells that bring instant comfort and a desire to wrap up in the softest afgan we have. The smells of fall are, for me, second only to the distinctive smells of late summer in Colusa County...part tomato harvest, part hot sun and part drying prunes.

October is a very emotional month for us....highs and lows. But, having Kainoa with us has made the highs even higher and the lows seem not so low. We're having the most fun exploring pumpkin patches, cider mills, petting zoos and our very first Parent's Night!

Farmer's Market Fun

Davis has one of the best local farmer's market. Not just because the produce (and pastries, and honey and kettle korn) is fresh, usually organic and always beautiful...but because there is so much to see and do that a whole morning slips away and everyone has a good time.

They have this fabulous merry go 'round that is pedal-powered. Grandma and Paka took Kainoa on his first ride a couple weeks ago and when we went to the market this morning, Kainoa remembered and led us straight to it. We watched for awhile, then he got in line, paid his dollar and picked out the frog. He rode it all by himself....I was amazed as I watched him hold on tight with both hands. He's grown up so much.

Timi and I must use incredible self-control when we approach the Lab Rescue booth. They always have such sweet Labs and that's how we found Sheba. Kainoa doesn't help much either...he loves them so much!

Kainoa has taken to trains and trucks....every time we see or hear a train or a truck he exclaims "Toot Toot" and does the appropriate sign for whichever is near (Train) or (Truck). So, when we went to Fairy Tale Town this morning, he was most interested in the huge train. He's never shown much interest in any of the climbing structures (except the playground) so we were very excited when he climbed aboard and took his turn "driving" the train.

Today we escaped the Sacramento heat (100+) and took the Vallejo Ferry to Pier One and the Ferry Building. Even though Timi makes the trek most days of the week, today was Kainoa's first (of many, I hope). We had such a wonderful day. The ferry ride is quick and always reminds me of ferry trips we took as a family on the Bremerton ferry in Washington State.....I'm just so excited to be able to share this with Timi & Kainoa.
It was a perfect weather day. Absolutely clear blue sky and shining bay. I always love seeing all the sail boats and had a wonderful time pointing them out to Kainoa. We even had a helicopter fly overhead! We stood out on the observation deck for part of the ride and my little sailor loved the wind in his hair and watching the waves form behind us as we sped along.

We had a fantastic lunch at Taylor's Automatic Refresher. Their sweet potato fries are worth the trip alone!!! We then walked along the Embarcadero and enjoyed the cool breeze off the bay. The fact that the Bay Bridge is closed for the weekend certainly didn't keep many people from enjoying The City. So many different people, different languages....I so love San Francisco!

We headed to Pier 39 and Fisherman's Warf. But, instead of going through the heart of the pier, we walked around it and Kainoa enjoyed the boats and all the seagulls. The highlight was when we approached the cacophony of barks from the hundreds (at least it seemed like it) of sea lions basking in the sun. We could have stayed there for an hour, Kainoa was fascinated!

Yea for Baths!!

We love bath time....Kainoa will spend as much time in the tub as we allow. Many of the bath times remind me of Dennis the Menace comics where his parents walk in and the duckie and ship are floating atop an overflowing tub and the floor is covered with water. Now, we're not at the point where Kainoa is allowed anywhere near the tub alone, but SOMEHOW the floor always ends up wet and so do we.

I came home from work the other night and found this handsome (although wildly coifed) little boy waiting for me...

Kainoa has been using a spoon for some time now...but usually it's in one hand and he eats whatever's in his bowl with his other hand unless it's something sticky or gooey, then he's a master at the spoon. Well...the last few weeks have been what I can only imagine as a glimpse into full fledged toddler independence. He must do it himself! He has no interest in being fed and gets quite noisy if I insist on feeding him (usually in the interest of time), which usually manafests as a screech, a vise-like grip on the spoon and a "no, no, no." This is good, right?!?

18 Months Old

As of today, Kainoa has been home with us longer than he was away from us. We also have had him home longer than we officially waited for him. He ALSO is 18 months old!! Two years, heck...9 months, ago I never thought (hoped, sure) we'd be sitting here. He is such an amazing little person and has filled our life with this incredible joy, a deep love and such a wide range of emotion (all three of us) that I cannot imagine my life without.

For all the changes in his short life, Kainao has come through like a champ. He takes most things in stride and as long as blankie and paci are nearby, everything is right with the world. We are beginning to hold 'conversations.' Actually, they are more of a q&a type of exchange...but it is so much fun when I ask him a question and he responds with an actual answer instead of a blank stare or his cocked head and saying "huh??" Yes, his answers are still a simple one syllable "ya" or "no"...but they are still answers!

Sleeping like a baby....

I think I may have figure out where that saying came from. Mind you, when we first came home with Kainoa I was sure whoever said that was high on something because the way he slept (or not) was not something we enjoyed nor would have encouraged anyone to copy. Anyway....at 9 o'clock last night we heard the unmistakable chirp of a dying smoke detector battery. We played detective and were sure it was the alarm in the hall...so we quietly got out the ladder, found the batteries (quite lucky we had some in the junk drawer), and replaced the offending 9V. All was well until 1 minute later...another chirp!

More detective playing....many chirps later we discovered that it was coming from Kainoa's room <> and it was being amplified by the baby monitor. It either had to be changed or none of us would get any sleep....except, appearantly, for Kainoa. We decided to risk it and try to change the battery. Our thought was that it would be easier to try to get him back to sleep than to try to sleep and ignore the beep and possibly have him wake up in the middle of night. Well, all of that planning was for naught. We opened the door, used the ladder and changed the battery .... all without as much as a peep from our sleeping baby.

Random Fact #1 I love movies. That's not the random part - this is: I have a very low threshold for what is "good".... if it makes me laugh (even just a chuckle) or cry, it passes as good. Be careful when asking me for movie recommendation ;-)

Random Fact #2 I loved 4-H. I can't wait for Kainoa to be old enough to join and really hope, deep down, that he loves it at much as I did and I can't wait to be a 4-H leader. I did everything...raised a hog and sold it at auction, learned to sew and cook, learned how to be a clown (yes, a clown), public speaking, lots of community service, you name it, I most likely did it.

Random Fact #3 I hate doing dishes. I can't even blame it on my parents...it was never punishment or even a chore (that I remember). I just hate doing it....I pretty much always have....much to the chagrin of former roommates and now my husband. Rest assured, I do them...just not my favorite household chore. My dream robot will wash all the dishes in our house whenever they're dirty and will dry them and put them away.

Random Fact #4 I make cards. They are so much fun. I never considered myself gifted in the arts...but this is one area that allows me to put color and texture together in a small manageble project with a clear beginning and pretty clear end. Unfortunately, this creates a litle addiction for me...I am addicted to paper, embellishments and Cricut. I posted a couple of my favorites below.

Random Fact #5 My husband and I started dating after spending an afternoon together at a day spa in Santa Cruz. The more random part is that we were there to celebrate with a mutual friend that ended up being the best man at our wedding.

Random Fact #6 I swam with the dolphins in Makena, Maui. It wasn't just because we could...but more because I couldn't get back in the kayak...and I tipped over the kayak, a kayak that was supposed to be un-tippable. Also on that trip I married my husband. So far, we've always been able to get back in our kayak, regardless who tipped it over.

Random Fact #7 I lived in Detroit for 5 years. When I agreed to move there, I didn't even know where Michigan was (geography was not my best subject!). I joined the Jesuit Volunteers and truly was "ruined for life." When I first heard that phrase, I thought it was hokey and it couldn't possibly refer to me. Well, 12 years later, I'm still finding new ways that JVC and my community touched my life. I learned so much about myself as well as my place in this wide, wide world.

Random Fact #8 My toenails are always polished. They are only "naked" during my monthly pedicure for a brief few moments between the old color and the new.

We took a little trip over to Oakland to explore their version of Fairy Tale land. It was huge! Lots of rides, animals, things to climb on, marionnette puppet shows, children's theater and very clean bathrooms with large stalls and changing tables in both men's and women's restrooms. (yes, sometimes, it's a clean bathroom that makes the biggest impression...at least on the mamas and daddies).

It's official....we have another fish on our hands. Timi and I both love the water and sure enough, so does Kainoa. Today, as soon as we got home and let Sheba out to go potty Kainoa started taking off his clothes and pointing to the swim diapers. He was ready to get wet! Nevermind that it was 5 o'clock and I still had to figure out dinner :-) Fortunately, he is still fairly easily distracted and the promise of juice redirected him and swimming was forgotten.

Kainoa Be Nimble

Today we celebrated Father's Day with my dad, my brothers and of course, Timi. Thank goodness for the wonderful men our families that take the roll of "Father" seriously and relish being called "Dad." There is no question how dedicated Timi, Andy, Robert, Scott, Geoff, Andrew and Rick are to their families. Timi and I are grateful to the men we call Dad for being such strong role models and guiding us as we learn to parent our children.

As many of you know, Kainoa is full of energy (far more than his dad and I have....combined!) When he's up, he's up and when he's sleeping, he's down for the count. This weekend was no exception. We spent Saturday morning with a great group of friends from our playgroup exploring Fairy Tale Town. He always enjoys talking with the animals, climbing on the benches...climbing on everything, actually, and the very highlight of our visit is watering the vegetable garden. He goes straight for the watering cans, picks one and waits for me to fill it with water. Then, he proceeds to dump the water on the nearest plant and his feet. Same routine, same huge smile. But, moments after he's safely strapped in his car seat, blanket in his lap and paci tucked between his lips...he's OUT. Ahhh....the life! Play hard, sleep well. We should all be so lucky.

Last Saturday we had a fantastic time meeting up with other families that have adopted children from Taiwan. So many of the children were at St Lucy's along with Kainoa...what a joy to be able to connect in this fun way. I sincerely hope (and will do my part) that we continue to meet up at least once a year to continue to foster these relationships and nurture this common heritage our children share.

Race, heritage and multicultural families have been a common theme in many of my conversations this week. Maybe stemming from the picnic, maybe from reading this post about finding a school that embraces cultural differences, whatever the impetus, I'm glad. My job (my life, actually) affords me the opportunity to explore these issues every day.... how cool is that?!?! I love that I can talk with friends, colleagues and clients about race & culture, our experiences, our expectations, and our challenges and truly let these be as they are...learn from them, not judge them. How blessed am I? Very.

Ok, maybe not yet....but soon. For now, we'll have to settle for the bike trailer. We've had a couple great bike rides and I'm so happy that we can get back into an activity that we've (me, anyway) put on hold since Kainoa came home. He loves riding back there...he just has to get used to the helmet. Thanks Grandma and Paka...we love it!

Fun new find...for any of you that love music and enjoy supporting new artists. Our friend's sister has come out with her debut album and what a wonderful album it is! I highly recommend you check it out. We just got it in today's mail (a brief "3 cheers" for CDBaby..I ordered it on Thursday and used just their regular shipping) and have it on repeat so it's been playing for the last couple hours. Kainoa loves it, too...he's particularly fond of Sugar (#4) and Chega De Saudade (#5) both very dance-able. For those of you here in Sacramento...she's also a local. Taking the Wheel

Thank you all who have been supportive during this most recent transition to day care and my new job. Your encouraging words have been so wonderful. My new job is AWESOME! I can't wait to get groovin'....I have so much to learn and am loving every bit of research I'm doing.

Day care update We've made it through two weeks now and all is well. We've survived our first cold (yes, after only 4 days he brought home a cold) and a transition from weekend back to "school." He's doing wonderfully and each day seems to be a bit easier and he's a bit more comfortable to be himself. He's even doing 'art.' I had the pleasure of watching him play one day before he noticed I was there. It's hard to describe, but it was so neat watching him. He's still cautious and always has a serious look on his face. He seems to be intentional in every move he makes and is very aware of his surroundings. I'm still learning so much about him and his wonderful personality. Then...the look when he sees me. It's the best look. It melts my heart and makes me smile throught my whole being. His little legs can't carry him fast enough and he flaps his arms as if they'll propel him over to me.

Mother's Day After many years of bittersweet (some were downright sad) Mother's Days...I've had two very special ones. Exactly a year ago, we found out about Kainoa. It was such a wonderful celebration...my heart was light and we were so excited...I hadn't started to feel the weight of the wait yet. Then, of course, this year, he's here with us. My hubby and little boy took me out for pancakes...what a treat! Then, we had my parents, brothers and their families over for lunch and swimming. The food was delicious, as always, and we had so much to celebrate. We are expecting a new neice next month and my 8 month pregnant SIL was absolutely glowing. I've said it before...and I'll say it again...thank goodness for families...especially Moms.

What a Week!

It was truly another week full of firsts. We entered the world of daycare. Just the sound of it used to make my stomach knot up. It doesn't really matter that during and for a year after college, I worked for an early intervention preschool and throughout high school I babysat and worked for inhome child care providers. Over the last few months, we even visited many day cares and talked with parents that had their children in day care...I was sure I was prepared. Simply, I was not.

Monday we did great getting up, eating breakfast, getting showered and dressed. Kainoa even got into his car seat without a struggle. We were going to this! **deep sigh** Then, I walked in the door. No tears, just a knot the size of an orange in the pit of my stomach. Then, I walked in the door to the toddler room. Still, no tears, just a bigger knot and squeezing my baby just a little bit tighter and I swear, he was hugging a bit tighter, too. The teachers were there and pleased to see us. Seven other little people were playing and quite interested in us. They all seemed happy, surely, this would easy. Put him down, get a toy, give a kiss and go on my way. Well...not really.

Ms Christine started filling out paperwork and I was spelling our last name. As I came to the b (a natural pause for me) the tears came...along with a nice little hiccup/sob. The teacher's face fell and asked me quickly if everything was ok. Well, of course everything's ok...I'm just leaving my baby with you and this means so much else is also changing. (read with just a little sarcasm). She was very compassionate and I really just thought the above sentence. She assured me it was totally normal and I could stay as long as I liked.

I was prepared to stay an hour, but it became clear that Kainoa would not explore the wonderful toys and books until I was no longer there. So, after about 30 minutes, Ms Christine offered a toy and I slipped out. I don't know if I've talked much about Kainoa's keen sense of my location at all times, but it was on overdrive. As soon as I opened the door to the room to leave he screamed. Oh my....my heart tore and I couldn't leave. So, I stayed a few more minutes and tried again. This time, he cried, too. But, I went in to talk with the Director about our paperwork and then left. Of course, I was crying while talking with her, too. She was very sweet and assured me that I could stay in the office and watch him, if I wanted. Although I desperately wanted to, I knew that if he saw me, it would make it only worse. So, I left and called 10 minutes later. He was fine and they were playing outside. **another deep sigh** Ok, we can do this!

Fast forward to today, Thursday. We've had 4 drop offs, 4 pick ups, four lunches, 8 snacks and even 2 naps! He cries a little less each day. The teachers are getting to know him. They let him eat in a high chair and nap in a crib...much easier transition than going straight to the cot and table & chair. My "guilt knot" is still there and will probably take a while to shrink a bit. I really don't want to go into that here and now, I'm sure I'll discuss my thoughts on it at some point, but for now, it's there for better or for worse.

Now, for some fun....
